I heard that a bichon does not potty train very well, is this true? I am adopting a male who still has accidents and that can be expected. He wears a belly band, he is a little overa year, will he grow out of that and what can I do, other than constantly taking him out.
:^) Scroll down the main page to "Training and Communication" section to find what you're looking for. The 2 youngest unspayed female bichons I rescued were 1 1/2 and 2 and trained readily with consistency and perseversence and lots of praise. You train just as you would a new or baby puppy regardless of age. It's back to basics. If he's not neutered, I'd have that done ASAP. I too use belly bands and diapers to aid in training b/c I have carpeting throughout and rescued 4. My first, Kasey, was 7 months and cocked his leg 3 times inside but never after that. Bichons can be stubborn but are very intelligent and blossom with attention; however, they can be vindictive when they don't get the attention they demand. Set the rules and be consistent. I'm always here to help. Can't wait to see pics. Just love the breed!

PS: Again, welcome to the site and enjoy reading. This is the intro section though so search main page for similar topic to post there. It does take awhile to figure site out and it's so worth the time.
I have 2 male bichons and they have never worn a belly band. The first I did not crate train, which ws a lot of hard work and peserverance, but you can do it. My second one was crate trained and it was a joy to house train. Crate traing does work. You need to perservere and be strong and keep to a routine. It is when you mess up the routine that the dogs will get confused. I taught my youngest one to knock on the door when he wants to go out to the toilet. I used training pads that I would put by the door that my bichon would eventually go out. Remember it will take time and its not instant results. Also watch your papers on the floor as accidents do happen.

Good luck.
