Some Bichons who have not been well socialised will hate to have their legs groomed, its quite a common factor in coated dogs. Here is a few tips to help you achieve this safely for both:
1) Place some oil on your hands and gently stroke this into the legs of your pet.
2) Massage into the legs for a few days prior to taking a comb to the area
3) Play kiss with the dogs legslike mum would do when pup was young, gently blow warm air into the legs and talk softly to your pet whilst doing this
4) Stroke the coat the other way on the legs as you massage the are to be combed
5) On day 3 use a soft baby hair brush that pup has sniffed and chewed for a short while and gently stroke the area to be groomed.
6)Caress the coat all over with the baby brush
7)Day 5 use a pin comb that you allowed doggy to lick n play with and gently stroke NOT comb all over the body and move towards the feet and legs, talk all the time and start to comb , if he objects stop and go back to baby brush with oil and talk softly
8) Repeat this process over a 6 week period and daily
9 BY week 10 all should be fine and doggy should come to you to be groomed
10) Always reward the dogs good reactions with a small treat
Thanks... Benji does not like his legs groomed. Anywhere else is ok, so shall try these tips

It also helps to be touching/massaging legs/paws when just sitting and relaxing. My adult bichons did not like anyone touching their legs or paws but continue to improve with touching and reassurance. Persevere!
Thanks Nikki.
He lets me groom him everywhere but as soon as it comes to the legs he is not happy. I get little bits at a time done, and if anyone could hear me as i groom him, coaxing him they would have a good laugh LOL
Have started to massage his legs and paws as he sits on my knee or by me.
I meant to say I love the blue& red collar your dog has on in the picture.
Perservere as Toby too doesn't like his legs being groomed. Talk to him as it helps. Try and find a nice soft brush as that helps too.
I usually try and groom him twice a day as his hair is so long now. Plus apart from not wanting it to matt he looks so cute when he is fluffed up and freshly brushed....with little bits of curly legs ... I cannot get at! LOL
I am taking him for his first groom two weeks today.
Hope grooming session went well. Kasey was around 7 months old when we got him and he wailed so that we needed ear plugs. I was afraid she wouldn't do him again but he didn't phase her a bit! Kasey is my 2 1/2 yr old alpha devil dog! LOL!

PS: Kasey already had his name when we got him. My daughter took it as a sign that he was mean't for us; she loves Kasey Kane, the nascar driver. She bought a red, black, and white "Kasey Kane"collar and leash for him as soon as we got him. First time he blitzed the speed convinced us that he was named appropriately. LOL!

LOL
He is gorgeous!
I have been strokingBenji's legs and paws while trying to distract him from realizing, but bichons are far too clever for their own good!
Got just over a week to go to grooming day.... he screams when he is not next to me or my husband, but he his a very friendly little boy
It is amazing how many people I speak to when out walking him. He is picked up, kissed and cuddled.
You haven't got to be shyowning a bichon! LOL

:$What does the term BLITZED mean? I pray it is that 70 mph dash thing GG does sometimes in the house for about 2 minutes....around the sofa,,,,thru to the kichen...around the island....into dining room...around the dining table and back again to the family room sofa...about 5 times at least...(we thought at first she had gone mad)....I'm praying this is a normal Bichon thing...it is hysterical..but don't want to approve of something that could be abnormal.....
That 70 mph dash thing is GG being absolutely normal! You've experienced a bichon blitz! LOL! So much fun! The first time Kasey blitzed, we thought he'd gone mad too! Not mad... or maybe so... ALL Bichon! A happy bichon! I can throw my arms up and yell BICHON BLITZ and all 5 go at it! It's hillarious! Enjoy!

Thank Heavens!! We are loving her sooooo much!
I did have an "issue" while we are on the grooming forum( I'm navigating my way around the site finally) I can brush/comb her out fairly easily loleach night...But her hind parts around and under her tail seem to get tangled and she has a FIT when I try and untangle them...
I use...pin brush, metal comb, soft brush....still seems to be tangles there and she despises it! (wants to bite me, the comb, the air...whatver...any help??? She is still soooo little....
Use soft brush and then comb doing little sections at a time, holding fingers close to skin to prevent pulling and discomfort. I'd stay away from slicker in that area;probablyhurts b/c ofcontour (I do use a smaller shorter prong slicker.) It's a sensitive area and not unusual for herto notlike you touching, but persevere. Praise her and offer a special treat. Make it a positive experience.Sometimes they're more cooperative when tired; may even sleep through it. She'll accustom to it eventually when she realizes your not going to hurt her andshe will resign to having it done. Again, keep praising! Good luck!

The bichon blitz is so funny. Today Shea blitzed while holding my husbands slipper in his mouth! He ran around and around for about 3 minutes and dived into his bed! Someday I want to catch it on video. We too thought he was insane the first time we saw it. Looked it up on computer and some people actually have put their bichon's blitzing on youtube. Check it out under bichon blitz. We laugh so much when he blitzes.
They are great aren't they! So much fun! Hooked for life! Been blessed with the bichon curse: kisses & fluff. What a way to go! I'm counting on them blitzing to at least 15. Please let it be so... Love my babies!
Nikki
PS: I don't know if I'm clever enough to video them all blitzing with my phone. If I want them to do it they probably won't. Kasey doesn't like technology; runs and hides now when I try to film him. Devil dog!...
Keep massaging those "touchy" areas and they will learn to trust you to do whatever. Check out the other posts on "Blitzing" and/or post your own new one!
Hi GG's Mom, You might want to spray some sort of detangling / matting solution on to the areas as these will help with tangles and matts. I have come across Wahl Easy Groom Detangler Spray which seems good. I use Ring 5 - S P Fortified with Mink Oil Grooming Spray 473ml (Ref. 4224)and I use Chris Christensen - Ice on Ice 2oz leave in coat conditioner(Ref. 1681). I get both my items from Hub International:

Mink oilis very good for bichons coats. It brings it out lovely and silky and gets rid of the dryness plus helps with the matts and tangles.
Thanks Nikki & Sarah! I'll try and get the conditioner &/or detanlger. And I WILL perservere!!! I have found doing it the last thing at night right before bed time is the easiest..( if there is such a thing). I have been noticing that she has "freckles" or a birthmark of some kind (black pigmentation) just above her nose...sometimes more noticiable than others..(always see it during bath... duh) is this a normal thing too?
I love this site! You guys are wonderful!
Perfectly normal to have dark pigmented areas. My stud Jollie is from Brazil and Brazilian Bichons have a lot of black pigmentation. My other male, Kasey is a US bred dog and he has some pigmentationchanges that are amedium tan color but not black like the Brazilianbred Bichons. I noticed that Kasey's darker pigmented areas become darker and more noticeable as he aged.
