Hi All
Ralphy's coat has blown. Karen has been giving me some advice as to bathing and oil etc.
My goodness what a few days. It's taken me two to three hours a day for the past few days.
Is this likely to happen once or twice a year or is it a one off?
And do I need a special tool (rake/furminator) as I am struggling between the comb, brush and slicker. I also have a de-tangler with large prongs that rotate which seems a bit easier on him.

Hi Hazel
I had the same with Lulu about 6 weeks ago, seems to have settled a little. I don't use a slicker brush at all, I use a wooden pin brush and greyhound comb, and just do the hair in very small sections to get through the thickness. I absolutely smother her in Cowboy magic, seems to help pull matts apart and comb through tangles.

Cowboy Magic is a GREAT product! Highly recommend! Poor Ralphie and poor Hazil. Good luck! Reason my bichons are sporting shorter cuts these days. I just have too many; but, I do love the longer show cut. I love to look at Laraine's pics!
Oh dear a blowing coat. Good news blowing will only last a few weeks, its the transmission from puppy to adult. Plenty of oil as Karen suggested, cowboy magic is brilliant.
Do not use rake, slicker or furminator, this will break the coat. Wooden pins and greyhound comb as Andrea suggested are perfect and kind. small sections is the key and of corse everyday whilst blowing at least twice a day, just to save you time, and keep the little one comfortable.
i have never heard the saying a blowing coat what does it mean? losing the puppy coat?? at what age dose this happen as freddie lost a lot of his coat a few months ago it drove me mad got on my chest on our clothes but it seems to have stopped now thank goodness

Ha ha yea Jean thats exactly right, looks like Freddie did it without to much hassle. Can start at around 8-9 mnths
Ralphy's coat has calmed a bit but still lots coming out.. like that fuzzy felt children used to play with. I could make a jumper with it. Where does it all come from...? He looks so thin now not puffed up at all. Will another undercoat grow back do you think? He is 10 months tomorrow.
My OH is bemused as I said he wouldn't shed but forgot to mention the occasional shearing requirement Ha! Ha!

Here is a couple of pics of him all oiled up just now for those who haven't already seen his new look on facebook... poor soul... compare to the fluufy look in the avatar
awww bless him. He still loks so gorgeous. xx
Yes his coat will grow back, non shedding dogs do shed but instead of shedding onto furniture and carpets they shed within the the coat, this needs to be brushed out or it will matt, this is why daily grooming is a must.
opps forgot to mention when you come to wash out that oil be sure to add shampoo to the coat before you add any water, or he will stay greasy
awww bless him , I think my friend has ralphy's sister I will check with Karen, her coat is stating to matt now too, omg didn't realise how hard they are to keep Karen did warn me lolI said they were easier than the bichon but its getting harder.Mind you I bathed freddie today and he has no Matt's thank the lord, but his coat looks a bit broken I have taken some photos today I will put on here later, Carol should I trim the coat at the ends or should I leave it?

Thanks Carol...
Fortunately I had read some advice you had posted on EB to someone else a while ago about shampoo first when was coat oiled so at least I did that in the right order.

If the coat is broken it will require a tidy up, this is because the coat is hair not fur and will like human hair split. Good conditioner at this time is important as is anti static spray BEFORE a comb thru.
